The St Helena report and the gap in media

Several yachts jostle for third position in race to Jamestown

map day 8Two yachts are now well out in front in the Governor’s Cup yacht race to St Helena, but several boats are tussling for third position in the race – not allowing for handicapping.

map 29 dec race for 3rdThe race tracker shows a cluster of yachts to the east of lead boats Banjo and Sandpiper 2, including JML Rotary Scout, which has two St Helenian scouts aboard.

Another vessel, Indaba, appears to lie behind the chasing group, but in fact its position was logged much earlier in the day.

For much of the race winds have been disappointing, but in the 24-hour period to 09.00 on 28 December, lead boat Banjo covered 227 miles.

The reduced crew of Ray of Light, sailing home under a jury rig after their mast snapped, remain in good spirits, thanks partly to a flatter sea with “less slamming” into oncoming waves.

A message on 29 December 2012 said: “Yesterday we rigged a bright coloured imitation squid with a double hook and were rewarded with a beautiful 10kg long fin tuna. The fillets are deep in the fridge!”
