Dr Sarel Bloem and his wife Elza are to leave the island on the next RMS sailing to Cape Town, says the health and social welfare directorate. Dr Bloem arrived on St Helena in April 2005 – for a “short term” locum post. Within three months he was senior medical officer.
His tenure had seen the introduction of nurse-led clinics for diabetic and cardiac patients, and digitalisation equipment to allow x-rays to be viewed remotely by radiologists in South Africa.
Working on St Helena had been “very challenging”, he said, but enjoyable.
