Cyril and Caz top the poll in Ascension election

Ascension Island has seven new councillors after a Hallowe’en election.

Experienced island politicians Cyril Leo and Caz Yon earned the highest number of votes in the 31 October 2013 poll, with 159 and 139 votes respectively.

Also elected were Samantha Jean Arms-Lawrence, Toni Bendall, Keturah Viola George, Nicholas Ivan John, and Larry James Poultney.

William Alexander Minto and Jane Elizabeth Harris Cranfield both secured a strong tally of votes – but not quite enough to win one of the seven council seats.

Ascension hires a private eye service

A firm of private investigators in the UK has been hired by the Ascension Island Government. But it would take a good detective to glean many clues to the nature of the work involved.

The Oxford-based agency’s website reveals little. It says: “North Court Investigations are pleased to have recently been instructed by the Ascension Island Government, assisting them with their enquiries here in the UK.

“We have received instructions from governments around the world during the past 10 years. However, Ascension Island is by far the remotest client we have ever had.”

It adds: “Ascension Island may well be the remotest place we have received instructions from, but the place the our service took place was far from being remote.”

The company offers a range of services, from investigation work to the far more mundane task of formally serving documents papers on people involved in legal cases.

“It just goes to show that private detectives and process servers are needed throughout the world,” says the company, “and very often in places most people wouldn’t ever imagine.”
