Marksman Simon Henry has won St Helena’s first ever gold medal in the history of the Island Games – along with a second silver.
News of the gold medal came through late on Thursday (18 July 2013) in an email from Pamela Young, who accompanied the island’s team to Bermuda. She wrote:
“After we thought it couldn’t get any better than two silver medals to bring home; we have just received the good news that Simon Henry has won a gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle shooting. Wow! What an achievement; we are ecstatic. Well done Simon!"
She signed off with “best regards from a very happy Team St Helena”.
Earlier in the day, St Helena Government announced that Simon had won his second silver medal at the games, following his shared success with Carlos Yon.
This time he earned second place in the 50m 3 Position Small Bore Rifle Open Event with a score of 535, just 29 points behind Gotland and four points ahead of Guernsey.
Carlos followed closely behind in 6th position out of 11 shooters.
The government press release said: “These results make this St Helena’s best ever performance in the Island Games, with several events still to come.”
And that was before news broke of Simon’s gold medal.
