Shayla’s degree gives island a first class hat trick

Shayla thanked her family and friends: “I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said.

Shayla Ellick of Cow Path has become the third St Helenian student to be awarded a first class honours degree in the space of a fortnight.

The announcement of her degree from the University of Hertfordshire in England comes after Kimberley Yon-Roberts – also of Cow Path – and Gareth Drabble of Levelwood learned of their own success.

Shayla left the island in 2008 under the island’s scholarship programme to undertake four years of study for her BSc Hons environmental management degree. She studied biodiversity and conservation, business and the environment, global change and development.

Her final year studies included habitat management and solving environmental problems.

That knowledge could be especially useful on St Helena, where cloud forest is being re-established and efforts are to be made to improve habitat for the island’s unique wirebird,  as part of the proposed Wirebird Hills eco resort.

Shayla is now carrying out work experience on the UK overseas territories project at the famous Kew Gardens in London, where she also spent time during her course.

She said: “I’ve had a great experience throughout these past four years. I’ve made so many friends here and will be sad to leave them, but I’m really looking forward to coming back home after my graduation in late November and giving back everything I’ve learned.”

Colin Moore, the island’s director of education, said: “This is a truly inspirational story of success. Well done Shayla.”
