1940s – a first attempt

St Helena airport timeline:

1942

April: construction starts on an airstrip on Ascension Island, after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941 brought the United States into World War Two. Aircraft could land within six months, enabling America to transport troops and equipment across the Atlantic.

1943

October: a South African Air Force team spent four months on St Helena, investigating possible sites for an airfield. Deadwood was the favoured location. Engineering and weather problems meant the idea was dropped.
