After 34 years, annual gathering of UK Saints is on the move

The annual gathering of St Helenians in the UK is moving to a new venue in 2014 – after 34 years at Reading Rugby Club.

Organisers Trevor and Vilma Toms made the decision partly because of improved facilities and lower costs.

The move will mean the party can carry on longer into the night. This year’s music had to end at 11.30 pm because the Reading club is surrounded by houses, but the new venue has a 24-hour licence, making a 2am finish possible.

Switching to the Abbey Rugby Football Club at Emmer Green in Reading will also mean more camping space, lower bar prices, full catering, and access to communal showers.

Lower costs mean the St Helena Association should be able to save about £1,500 on staging the August bank holiday event – all of which can be passed on to island charities.

It was estimated that about 1,800 people attended this year’s event on Sunday, 25 August, raising several thousand pounds for island causes.

Photographs, audio and video will appear on this site over the next few days.
