Blackout Sunday declared as St Helena is cut off from the world

September the 23rd was declared Blackout Sunday on St Helena because of a power shutdown that left it cut off from the rest of the world.

The planned power outage, to allow for upgrade work, meant the island’s communications went down – and sports fans were unable to pick up overseas football commentary.

Before the power was switched off, some Saints used Facebook to share their thoughts:

Nick Stevens: I’m struggling to tune into the world service with my short wave radio

Derek Richards: just gonna go out for the day…

Marina Rocky Osborne: we will send the results in morse code or smoke sigalls ha ha haaaaa x

Gavin Thomas: It may be a blessing in disguise for you Man U fans, you don’t really want to see your team take a severe beating!
