Rock-blasting in Rupert’s Valley is due to begin on 1 March 2012, as part of work to build a temporary jetty for landing airport construction materials.
People living in the valley have been promised they will get personal warnings of explosions.
Airport contractor Basil Read is also setting up a laboratory and store in the cannery works, which closed at short notice earlier this month.
Other works in the Rupert’s area include:
- A temporary road to the quarry
- A workshop near the cannery
- A platform for temporary fuel storage between St Mary’s Church and the power station
A statement from the St Helena Access Office says: ‘Further detailed information on the blasting operations will be announced closer to the date via both local radio stations.
‘Residents and workers in the Rupert’s area will also be contacted directly by Basil Read and Halcrow staff.
‘Basil Read has leased the building at which the Cannery used to operate in Rupert’s and will be carrying out minor modifications to the inside to accommodate a laboratory for testing concrete and soil samples and a dry storage area for equipment and material.’
